Policies Finally Take Action on Short Dramas! What Can You Not Accept the Most?

Short online dramas have been popular for a while now. As an emerging industry, it’s undeniable that they have shown vigorous development and broad prospects. However, issues such as inconsistent quality, plagiarized plots, and lowbrow or suggestive content have emerged one after another. Additionally, the financial issues behind these dramas deserve further attention.

The National Radio and Television Administration has issued the Notice on Further Coordinating Development and Safety to Promote the Healthy and Prosperous Development of the Online Micro-Drama Industry, which, to some extent, provides guidance and clarification on the aforementioned issues:

  • Short dramas are categorized based on total investment. Micro-dramas recommended for homepage or priority promotion on platforms must undergo review by the National Radio and Television Administration.
  • All micro-dramas broadcast, promoted, or distributed by online audiovisual platforms, mini-programs, or advertising agencies must hold a Network Drama Distribution License or complete the corresponding online filing and registration procedures.

Before being released, programs must display the Network Drama Distribution License number or program registration number in the specified format at the beginning of the episode.

Online audiovisual platforms are prohibited from broadcasting or promoting micro-dramas without a license or registration number.

Given the unique dissemination characteristics of online dramas, it is recommended to refine regulatory measures while also considering the establishment of public reporting channels for further oversight.
